Peru - Macchu Picchu
[report].pe.history.nature.travelling.[/report]
Here we are again, this time with a report from wonderful peru!
we came over from bolivia, from lake titcaca, and went to cusco, with is the ancient capital of the inca.
Around Cusco, wich is originally called "quosco", means navel of the world (changed by the spanish conquistadores) there are a lot of temples and monuments around. We visited a lot in and a round the city, travavelled trought the so called "sacred valley of the incas" and finally reached the famous citadell of macchu picchu.
For example, Moray in the sacred valley, they call it the inca labratory, here they tryed out wich plant is growing best in wich way
its said, that each terace has its own micro climate.Macchu Picchu is namend after the mountain on with it stand, it was the hiding place of the inca emporer in ancient times.
The setting of it is so perfect, that you nearly cant see it from down in the valley, because of that reason it was discovered in 1911, wich is really late for such a big place.
From the town "aguas calientes" you can enter the "old mountain" (means macchu picchu in quechua) by bus, but to reach that town you need to take the train from cusco, wich is veeeeery expensive (only for rich tourists
).poor tourists like us, have to take the slower, harder but cheaper and much more funny way

I took all my artificial skill to draw you a map

So we took a lot of different busses, to reach the hydroelectric powerplant, lying behind macchu oicchu, from where we followed the trainway, and walked over to aguas calientes. That way took us 12 hours, instead of 4 with the train, but is muuuuch cheaper

This is the part from Santa Maria to Santa Teresa, because it was raining we decided to take a taxi, and got to know alvaro from uruguay in there.
2 hours of walking the trainway from Hydroelectica to aguas calientes
And here we are at Macchu Picchu:
Again it was raining and cloudy, here you see the teraces for agriculturing, in case of an attack, they would have had enought food for ever!
we didnt let the rain stop us
and climbed up to huayna picchu, a mountain behind the inika city, on with there are more teraces and houses, and a great view over the area
looking down on macchu picchu
we climbed down on the other mountain side, and did a 3 hour round walk
we reached "gran caverna", where we didnt saw any tourists at all, not eerybody is so stupid to walk for hours

..and made our way back. Down there, close to the river is the train way we followed the day before, and we really didn`t see anything of macchu picchu
The postcard view over the whole city, in the back is the big mountain that we climbed before
because it was andreas birthday, we had a birhday drink with a great view on top of the city
The main plaza, inthe middle of the town
After climbing down by feet (for not paying the 7$ for the bus again!!) we had a local speciality for dinner: cuy al horno - guinea pig from the oven
tastes a bit like a mix of chicken and pork, but tasty!
that was our day in the nice old inca town, really enjoyed it. Now we are in Nazca and going on to lima in a few hours....
greetings to everybody at home, and: visit peru, its great!
